"Chaotic" mindsets make way for performance improvement

Even during challenging and uncertain times, leaders can foster higher performance levels from their teams using a three-stage process.

The first step is showing employees what the "promised land" looks like, says XVenture founder and CEO Mike Conway, whose coaching spans both workplaces and elite sports.

Leaders may not yet know exactly what it will look like, but it will be different to before and is not "somewhere we have to fear" – this is the most important thing to communicate, he says.

The second stage is to unify everyone. "What you're doing is building togetherness." In practice, that means leaders have to make the same sacrifices expected of their teams, and Conway stresses this applies to any pay reductions occurring....
